Responsibilities

ELCT Conflict Resolution Program is responsible for:

  • Initiating processes for conflict prevention, management and resolution.
  • Providing Peace Education to ELCT members and the community at large.
  • Specifically addressing the whole issue of building interrelationships and peace bridges, particularly between Muslims and Christians in Tanzania, to ensure peaceful co-existence
  • Conducting joint community based development projects for the prevention of conflict between Muslims and Christians.

Structure

The official name of the instrument is “The Muslim–Christian Commission for Peace Development and Conflict Resolution,” commonly and widely know by its Swahili abbreviation TUWWAMUTA (Tume ya Waislam na Wakristo ya Amani, Maendeleo na Usuluhishi Tanzania).

The Commission’s Constitution is in Swahili and English, and registration of the Commission, in accordance with laws Tanzania, has started. The Head Office of the Commission is Arusha.

Leaders of the Commission are:

  • Chairman – Alhaj Rajab Kundya
  • Vice Chairman – Bishop Dr. Erasto N. Kweka
  • General Secretary Mr. Amani Mwenegoha
  • Deputy General Secretary Alhaj (Rtd Major) Mohamed Mollel.

Objectives

  • To ensure success in efforts aimed at fostering peace, unity, co-operation and solidarity among the citizenry within Tanzania and in other countries of the world.
  • To nurture the society to have people who are sociable, respectable, civilised and live with integrity.
  • To initiate and operate joint development and economic projects and social services.
  • To enlighten others on the need for maintaining peace, unity, love, solidarity, development and good governance.
  • To educate the public and launch programmes on the environment, conservation, appropriate technology as well as the reduction and eventual eradication of poverty.
  • To support programmes to assist women, youth, children and elderly people.
  • To assist disadvantaged groups in the community such as refugees, victims of vagaries of weather such as floods, drought, hurricanes and those affected by HIV/AIDS and wars.
  • To undertake research on burning issues in the society.
  • To engage in conflict resolution efforts by collaborating closely with the Government and other like-minded bodies supporting the objectives of TUWWAMUTA.

Achievements

  • The ELCT officially started a Muslim–Christian Dialogue for peaceful Co- existence in 1996.
  • This culminated in the first, ever Consultation between leaders of the two main religions in Tanzania in November 1999.
  • In the year 2000, a Task Force was formed with the primary objective of setting up a Joint instrument for Peace, Development and Conflict Resolution.
  • By the 4th August 2001, a general assembly drawing participation of all religions bodies was inaugurated with the leadership elected.
