Kisarawe Lutheran Junior Seminary

The school was established in 1992 for students from the Eastern and Coastal Diocese and its former areas. It lies about 30 km away from the heat and the noise of the city on the top of a hill in the midst of trees and farms. It is build on the premises of the first Mission station outside of Dar Es Salaam, an area given to the German missionary Jacob Greiner by Chief Mhenga Mweneisi Sanze. Already when the mission was founded more than one hundred years ago, education was an important issue for the missionaries. Bishop Elinazer Sendoro followed this tradition of the church in Tanzania when he proposed to found a secondary school, Kisarawe Lutheran Junior Seminary, in the same place. During the following years the congregations of the Eastern and Coastal Diocese built the school with some help from churches in Europe and the United States.

Today the school comprises of O-Level and A-Level with both science and art subjects. Most of the teachers are Tanzanians, but there are always some missionaries from abroad helping to teach. The students in the school are between 14 and 26 years old and come mostly from various congregations from the Eastern and Coastal Diocese. The schools tries to admit an equal number of female and male students. They performed well during the national examinations and the school was always among the first 20% of the secondary schools in Tanzania.

During their free time the students have the opportunity to participate in various activities. They are active members of the Christian Association for Students (UKWATA) in Tanzania and have a successful choir. Various sport activities, clubs and discussion groups are offered.

The school works in a difficult environment. It has to try to keep the school fees affordable for church workers but they must at the same time cover the expenses for boarding, food, teachers salaries, repairs etc. Also the school is still facing a shortage of buildings. Even though congregations did a marvellous job in extending the school during the last years, there are still a lot of buildings which are needed. The biggest challenge the school is facing over the years is sufficient water supply. Drilling for water did not yet bring the necessary success and the facilities for rain water harvesting are not enough.
