In-Service II
Last May, Judy and a number of Makumira students and faculty gave the first Music In-service (seminar) for choir directors in Tanzania. What a week it was, with choir directors from four dioceses in attendance. And it was only the first of five. Four more were scheduled for other parts of Tanzania, so as to make the experience available to the other 16 dioceses. The first week of January saw the second Music In-Service -- this time held at Makumira's younger sister college, Iringa University College. Both Makumira and Iringa are campuses of Tumaini University, the national university of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. Here are some of the highlights:

This was the first time to have women participants. There were 3, including Pastor Adela. Notice also the difference in ages between the younger drummer (also a pastor) and the older musician on the other side of Pastor Adela.

Several participants taught the group songs from their own areas.

Here are our instrumentalists: brass, keyboard and traditional African instruments. We learned a variety of music that involved all types of instruments.

This veteran music leader is showing us the way music is conducted in his area. The second beat is indicated by a swaying motion: one hand in front, and the other hand behind the body. It is a very energetic form of directing that brings a heightened sense of vitality to the music.
