The  “Female Genital mutilation (FGM)”  program  had been on air aired on  RVOG for the last four years.

All the programmes for every week have been recorded from the target areas. In fact the listeners have shown great interest in participating in discussions. They felt their concerns were being voiced personally. Yet due to the expanse nature of the area, few places were not reached.

Again, owing to rising costs of fuel,  etc it was not possible to drive to most destinations. Instead, public transport was used. This, again, consumed much time. So, producers had to contact the groups concerned. This was done by mail and where possible, phone calls were made. Recording dates were set and discussions, etc recorded. Volunteers also come to  the studio to be recorded on their own.

It was interesting to note that Senior Social workers did involve themselves in this work. So did  consultants and public advisors, including government workers.

The net result is that most groups have made target areas aware of their social burden and responsibilities. Today, women no longer tolerate oppression from men. Courts are now dealing with cases intended to grant women and children their inherent rights.

Several case studies have revealed that hundreds of women condemn genital mutilation in females. Better still, those carrying out this evil practice have surrendered their implements and vowed never to re-engage in the game again. Owing to this awareness, the government has enacted legislation to restrogressive actions against women and children. In short, the target audience has been enlightened to the extent that most old beliefs and useless traditions have been overthrown. Thus paving the way to progress and better economic stand. Yet more years of programming are needed. This is because many people in Tanzania still practice this harmful custom of female genital mutilation. The campaign against female genital mutilation program has raised awareness and brought great changes among the people. Now they understand this practice to be harmful. So it should be eradicated at once!

In Kilimanjaro Region, FGM was practiced openly. But since the advent of these program, many women have understood the effect of FGM. They now perceive it as a degrading custom which must stop at any cost. Thus we need more time to educate those few women who still feel it is necessary to practice FGM. They will then understand how harmful this evil practice is. The program is absolutely necessary for our target audience.
