for Lushoto / Usambara

Since we putted the Booster for Usambara/Tanga, people could not listen to SYI programmes in Lushoto, because it is located in a deep valley, and the radio waves are just passing ahead of it.

It took quite some time to order and to prepare all the components used in this project. We are verz thankful to Peter Haberzettl managing to finance and ordering the transmitter (see: missioncares@ .org). The antennas were prepared in Moshi after getting the aluminum pipes from Germany, because they were no longer available.

As an antenna mast we used 2 waterpipes, which we prepared to fit into each other.

To charge the small back up batterz for the receiver, we added a regulating circuit to an old printer mains adapter.

We got quite some problems with the antenna cable delivering the power to the transmitting antenna. The cable we purchased had 30 dB attenuation for 100m !

So we had to try several different ones, until we could reduce the attenuation to 2dB for the 15m cable running up the antenna mast.

We were very glad to meet the bishop of the diocese, Dr. Munga, to get the first ideas where we could install the new booster. He gave us 2 options: one close to the cathedral of the late Bishop Sebastian Kolowa, the second one at a church staff house above Lushoto. After checking reception from our booster in Mlalo we decided to put it at the later one, because it is located higher.

Still the same day were able to set up the antennas. The next morning we finished the shelve and connections inside the house.

In the afternoon we visited the Irente blind school close by. Since years we had cloth aniamals we wanted to bring there. You can image how glad the blind children were, when every one could feel his or her own cushin animal.

Not far from the Irente Farm, where we got some Lunch, we went to a great fiew point up the cliffs of the usambara mountain. From there you can look very far South down to the main road, the connetion from Moshi to Tanga.
