Additional Charging by an Hydro Plant

Small water turbine connected to the water pipe boosts battery to avoid charging the battery by petrol generator

To reduce the generator operating hours during the rainy season an hydro electric plant was installed.

Available water quantity:  ..... litres/sec at 2.5 bar

Nozzle size:                    6 mm

Type of turbine:              Pelton wheel

Manufacturer of turbine: Harris/USA

Price including transport:  Abt. DEM 1500.-

Max. Carging current:     2.4 Amps/12V (at given water pressure and nozzle size)

Regulator:                       Shunt regulator, homemade

Experience:

This turbine saved many hours of generator work during the very rainy season (El-Nino) October97- August 98.

(see weather data of site)

While running, it made the solar system obsolete (2.4 Amps all around the clock!)

Weekly cleaning of the whole system had been absolutly necessary, to avoid blocking of the water intake, pipe system, nozzle  and the turbine. (Required time: abt. 2 hours per week.)

After more than 1 1/4 years (>10000 hours of operration) the slip rings and the brushes of the generator had been finished, and had to be replaced.
